Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the USA missile strikes "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of global law" launched "under a far-fetched pretext".

This decisive action shows that America will no longer stand on the sideline as innocent men, women, & babies are brutally killed in Syria.

A USA -led coalition has been bombing Islamic State-held territory across Syria, launching 24 strikes on Thursday alone, according to the US military's Central Command. Washington says Syrian government forces carried out a poison gas attack in northern Syria this week that killed at least 70 people. "We consider these steps taken by the United States to be a blatant violation of the 2015 Memorandum on preventing military incidents and ensuring security during operations in Syria's air space".

The two sides speak three times a week on the deconfliction line, officials said, but that frequency has picked up in recent months due to an increased tempo of fighting.

They were fired from two warships in the Mediterranean Sea, in retaliation for Tuesday's deadly chemical attack, which officials said used chlorine mixed with a nerve agent, possibly sarin.

"It is issued by a government that stands beside a regime that violated worldwide law by using chemical agents against its population, not to mention that Russian Federation only recently invaded and annexed part of a neighboring country's territory", said Pula.

"We are prepared to do more, but we hope that will not be necessary", she told the U.N. Security Council. Russian Federation has said the toxic agents were released when a Syrian airstrike hit a rebel chemical weapons arsenal, and that blame should not be apportioned until a full investigation has been completed.

Syria denied using chemical weapons.

The Pentagon and the Russian military established the so-called deconfliction line after Russia entered Syria's multi-sided civil war in 2015, propping up its ally, President Bashar Assad.

The U.S. officials also said they're aware of Russians with chemical weapons expertise who have been in Syria.
