Steve Fisher retires: 'San Diego State is my legacy'

13 April 2017

Fisher won National Coach of the Year that season as well.

After nine seasons with MI and 18 seasons at San Diego State, Steve Fisher is retiring as head coach of the Aztecs, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN, who was first to report the news. This season, the Aztecs went 19-14 in the Mountain West but didn't make a tournament for the first time since 2005. He was the head coach when the team won the NCAA championship in 1989, just weeks after the firing of coach Bill Frieder, who had accepted the head coaching job at Arizona State University just before the NCAA tournament began.

Brian Dutcher will take over as the team's new head coach after being the "head coach in waiting since 2011".

Two years later, Fisher was credited with assembling one of the best recruiting classes off all time - Michigan's "Fab Five" group of Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King and Juwan Howard.

In 2011, Fisher was awarded the Naismith College Coach of the Year, and in 2015, the Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. Fisher brought the Aztecs to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, two of which ended in the Sweet 16. "That usually doesn't happen in sports, but I'm proud of the bond that Dutch and I have formed over the years and it's been a privilege coaching with him and what a journey it has been".

Fisher previously coached at MI, guiding the Wolverines to the NCAA championship in 1989, just weeks after the firing of coach Bill Frieder, who had accepted the coaching position at Arizona State just before the NCAA tournament began.

Fisher then coached the Fab Five, overseeing one of the transcendent collections of talent in the college game. The Aztecs reached the NCAA Tournament by his third season, the first of eight during his 18-season tenure.

LeEco, Vizio Scuttle Proposed Merger
LeEco originally meant to build office space for 12,000 employees on a 49-acre property it acquired from Yahoo in 2016. Both LeEco and Vizio have announced that the merger agreement for the former to acquire the latter will not proceed.

Although he had one more year remaining on his latest contract, he has chose to end his career after a 19-14 season.

"I know the program is in great hands with Brian Dutcher", Fisher said.

"I'm not going to get in the way, but I'm going to be a part of San Diego State".

When Fisher arrived at San Diego State prior to the 1999-2000 season, few could have anticipated the metamorphosis the program would soon realize.

"I support Michael in his decision to transfer", Nebraska head coach Tim Miles said in the release.

In 1991, MI recruited the most highly touted freshman class in college basketball history.

Forward Malik Pope said it "was nothing but excitement" playing for Fisher. "Fisher sticks out. You can never go wrong with Steve Fisher". Thats why I was like, ‘I have no choice.
