Ohio's population of adults age 60 or older, which stood at 2.28 million in 2010, is expected to grow to 3.37 million by 2030, according to the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University. A 13-year follow-up study found that victims of elder abuse are twice more likely to die prematurely than people who are not victims of elder abuse.

"The goal [of the event] is awareness and education to the community and specifically to the population that would potentially be victims of abuse", said Kimberly Hawkins, Regional Long Term Care Ombudsman with Kerr- Tar Area Agency on Aging.

Minister for the Ageing Tanya Davies has urged the community not to be silent on elder abuse. Researchers still have much to learn about the magnitude and scope of elder abuse.

Mundy emphasized how tragic elder abuse can be.

"If a neighbour, a senior citizen or even a nursing home employee sees any abuse type of situation, they have to go to the police and report what they see", she said, stressing: "We can not assume the victims will report what is happening to them".

"The elderly can be targeted by close friends or neighbors".

As far as public transportation is concerned, two out of three of those who take public bus reported that they are offered seats regularly.

"Elder abuse is rarely discussed in policy circles, less prioritized for research and addressed by only a handful of organizations", notes Dr Etienne Krug, Director of the WHO Department for the Management of Non communicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention.
