Sen. Chuck Grassley to send Trump Jr. letter asking him to testify

14 July 2017

The Senate Judiciary Committee, headed by Chairman Chuck Grassley, will call on former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort to testify about his role as a foreign agent for a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine.

Grassley's comments also come after the top Democrat on the committee, California Sen.

President Donald Trump's eldest son released an email chain Tuesday that shows him discussing plans to hear damaging information on Hillary Clinton that were described as "part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

"If he comes before our committee - and we'll subpoena him if necessary - then it would be appropriate for anybody to get into anything that went on at that meeting", Grassley said.

Trump Jr. has said that while he would have probably handled the meeting request differently now, he believes he did nothing wrong by hearing out someone offering information about a political opponent during a heated political campaign.

'And I think it's raised a lot of questions, ' Grassley added, as the Donald Trump Jr story has devoured the news cycle for the past six days. He said he will leave that to Robert Muller, the special counsel investigating the president's campaign ties to Russian Federation.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said on "Fox & Friends" that he has written to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and DHS Secretary John Kelly in an effort to find out what happened.

Mississippi: US Marine Corps aircraft crashes, 16 dead
Mayor Carolyn McAdams of Greenwood, the county seat, said military officials were traveling to the crash scene on Monday night. Officials said six of the Marines and the sailor were from an elite Marine Raider battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

As reported in May, Special Counsel Bob Mueller is putting Manafort and former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn under a microscope as part of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Tuesday morning, Trump Jr. posted an email chain on his Twitter account documenting the arrangement.

The exchange showed Trump Jr. conversing with a music publicist who wanted him to meet with a "Russian government attorney" who supposedly had dirt on Clinton as "part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

Trump also questioned whether Putin was really gunning for his victory, as USA intelligence agencies have concluded.

He said the president had not been aware of Trump Jr.'s June 2016 meeting and didn't find out about his son's email exchange until "very recently". The Iowa Republican says he wants Trump Jr.to appear "pretty soon", and it could be as early as next week.

Investigations into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign have shadowed the White House for months.
