A judge ordered former Northwestern University professor Wyndham Lathem, 43, and Oxford employee Andrew Warren, 56, held without bond after prosecutors detailed a pre-meditated attack they said the suspects plotted in an online chat room.
Lathem and Warren are accused of fatally stabbing Trenton Cornell-Duranleau in Lathem's River North apartment last month.
An Illinois prosecutor shared disturbing new details about the July 27 slaying, describing to the court how Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau, the 26-year-old boyfriend of since-fired microbiology professor Wyndham Lathem, was stabbed 70 times at Lathem's Chicago condo and with such brutality that he was almost decapitated.
Police want to know why Warren, who arrived in the USA roughly 36 hours before the murder, came to this country and how and why he ended up connecting with Lathem. He suffered more than 40 stab wounds.
Cornell-Duranleau arrived at Lathem's residence that evening, according to police, who said the two were seen on surveillance video entering the building together.
Investigators say Lathem, who was sacked after the killing, had a personal relationship with Cornell-Duranleau. Afterward, Warren was to shoot Lathem while Lathem was in the act of stabbing Warren to death, she said. He was stabbed 70 times, with such force that he was almost decapitated, according to The Associated Press.
The man's last words were "Wyndham, what are you doing?" prosecutors said.
Guglielmi also said the two suspects donated $1,000 in the victim's name to the public library in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.
Badgers to play Notre Dame at Lambeau Field in 2020
Wisconsin and Notre Dame announced that they will play a series split between Lambeau Field and Solider Field for 2020 and 2021. Notre Dame is 8-6-2 in 16 meetings with the Badgers, and the schools haven't met since 1964. "There's so many connections here".
The commander said: "It was not domestic in nature like a husband-wife, or boyfriend-boyfriend, or love triangle - that was not the motive". "It was a little bit more dark and disturbing, as far as I'm concerned".
Warren, who says on Facebook that he lives in Swindon, Wiltshire, was suspended from his job as senior treasury assistant after Mr Cornell-Duranleau's body was discovered.
The stab wounds to Cornell-Duranleau included 21 to the chest and abdomen, and 26 in the back, as well as multiple cuts on his hands.
According to his obituary, Cornell-Duranleau was raised in Corunna, west of Flint.
The charges came after a post-mortem examination found the victim had methamphetamines in his system.
Warren and Lathem fled, sparking a nine-day, nationwide manhunt, during which officials said Lathem sent a video message to friends and family members, allegedly apologizing for his involvement in the crime.
Area Central Cmdr. Brendan Deenihan said Sunday police believe Lathem himself made the phone call.
Mr. Warren, who had arrived in the United States on his first visit a few days before the attack, surrendered to officers in San Francisco on August 4.
