At least 18 Egyptian policemen were killed and several people injured in an attack on a security convoy in the Sinai Peninsula on Monday, Reuters reported.
Egyptian officials say Monday's ambush left 18 police dead and seven wounded.
They then opened fire with machine guns at survivors of the blast.
On Sunday, police said they stormed a militant hideout in a Greater Cairo district, killing 10 suspected militants and seizing a cache of weapons.
Security forces had received information that a number of militants who escaped the restive North Sinai were hiding out in two apartments in Agouza and were planning a number of attacks in central governorates. The wounded included a police brigadier general.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but authorities said that they bore the hallmarks of the Velayat Sinai, a local affiliate of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, formerly known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to Daesh in 2014, and usually carries out similar assaults against the government forces. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief media.
It did not provide any casualty figures, but the attack appears to have been the deadliest on security forces in Sinai since July, when at least 23 soldiers were killed in a suicide vehicle bombing that targeted a checkpoint near the Gaza border.
Five policemen, including three officers, were also injured in the shootout, he said.
Egypt has been suffering from a spike in terrorist attacks targeting civilians in the mainland over the past year.
Egypt has battled militants in Sinai for years, but the insurgency became far more deadly after the 2013 military ouster of Mohammed Morsi.
