Al-Ahmed welcomes Hamas's decision to dissolve Gaza administrative committee

18 September 2017

Hamas has agreed to talks with the rival Fatah movement to form a unity government and hold general elections in the Palestinian territories.

Hamas on Sunday announced Sunday it agreed to dissolve its governing body in the Gaza Strip and allow the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority government take over. This latest effort comes at a time when Gaza's economy is a shambles, battered by an Israeli and Egyptian blockade, three wars with Israel, and Abbas's decision earlier this year to reduce funding for electricity in an effort to put additional pressure on Hamas. The deal was not clear whether Hamas is ready to place its security forces under Abbas' control - a key sticking point that has scuttled past reconciliation attempts.

According to the statement, Hamas is also ready to hold general elections.

Palestinian Authority also presurrized Hamas by reducing electricity in Gaza and cutting of salaries.

Reunification a decade after Hamas and Mr Abbas's Fatah movement battled for control of Gaza may hinge on whether complex issues related to power-sharing - which stymied reconciliation bids in the past - can be resolved.

Those reasons, coupled with an escalating sewage crisis that threatens the health of Gaza Strip residents and has ruined the Strip's beaches is contaminating the strip's beaches, and a crippling unemployment, have all contributed Hamas finally, maybe, crying Uncle.

The negotiations were "an expression of Egyptian interest in Palestinian reconciliation and ending the division, and our interest to realize the hopes of the Palestinian people by achieving national unity", CNN quoted Hamas as saying.

Despite the new accord, the Fatah group is insisting Hamas start implementing the deal before any further steps are taken.

"Hamas's step is a positive indication if they really dissolved the administrative committee and showed its willingness to hand over control to the unity government", Mahmoud al-Aloul, a member of Abbas Fatah party, told Voice of Palestine radio.

Abbas, now in NY for the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly, has yet to comment on Hamas's announcement.
