Brexit is our core task says new Ukip leader Henry Bolton

30 September 2017

Nigel Farage may no longer be Ukip's leader but he still casts a long shadow over the party he hauled from the fringes to the political centrestage.

Hugh Bronson, MEP and member of the hard-right party AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) speaks on the first day of the UK Independence Party (UKIP) National Conference in Torquay, south-west England, on September 29, 2017. Ukip unveiled its next former leader on the English Riviera yesterday afternoon and everyone had expected that it would be a straight fight between Peter Whittle, the former London mayoral candidate, and Anne Marie Waters, an anti-Islam activist who was described by one of her colleagues as the "Joan of Arc of neo-fascists".

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who led the party's successful Brexit campaign, had warned UKIP would be "finished" if it embraced an anti-Islam platform.

It stood candidates at the 1997 election, but was overshadowed by James Goldsmith's Referendum Party, which beat it in all but two seats contested by both parties.

He promised to pressure the government into a hard Brexit.

"Brexit is our core task". However it is not the end, when we leave the European Union that is not the end of the story.

Bolton, an ex-soldier, won 30% of the vote, seeing off Anne Marie Waters's challenge.

Given the court's decisions , other public schools are issuing memos re-affirming students' right to kneel . Both were well written articles that were interesting, informative and certainly timely.

Asked if he would "ban the burka", Mr Bolton said: "I don't think it's about banning the burka, is it?"

Nigel said: "He got my vote that was no doubt at all". None of us is Nigel. "I abhor the rhetoric that we are at war with Islam".

However, he said: "Islam is of concern, the nature of Islam and the practices of the religion are such that they tend to have a more dominating effect in a community where there's a larger Muslim population than the Christian population".

The 54-year-old won the leadership election in a tight seven-way race, becoming the party's fourth leader within a year.

Henry Bolton has been named leader of UKIP.

The party has been riven by splits and disagreements, one of which resulted in MEP Steven Woolfe being taken to hospital after a fight with another Ukip MEP. Instead he suffered a hefty defeat in February's Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election and later resigned after leading the party to a disastrous result in the snap general election.
