When the tests were conducted at the Louvre Museum in Paris, curators believe the sketch is "at least in part" by Leonardo.

Louvre conservation expert Bruno Mottin said "Monna Vanna" dates back to da Vinci's lifetime at the turn of the 15th century.

He said that they hoped to know the identity of the artist in a few weeks, in time for an exhibition at Chantilly to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death.

The Mona Lisa is thought to have been a portrait of the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a cloth merchant, and Florentine official.

About 20 paintings and drawings of a nude Mona Lisa exist in collections across the world but most have proved very hard to date.
