Shelby County Schools Statement On Students Kneeling During Anthem

30 September 2017

The Times reports that the principal at Parkway High School in Bossier Parish warned in a letter Thursday that students will lose playing time and could be kicked off teams if they don't comply with the rule.

Houston ISD issued a statement that said students will not be forced to stand during the national anthem.

Handing down punishments for public school students who choose not to stand during the national anthem is-like all prohibitions limiting free speech-unconstitutional.

Beal says..."We support student's freedom of expression, including the ability to peaceably protest what they see as the social injustices of the world". A statement from Louisiana High School Athletic Association Executive Director Eddie Bonine endorsed that stance, citing a letter circulated previous year in response to "multiple protests" by high school players taking a knee.

NFL players across the country have been protesting police brutality and racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem, a gesture that President Donald Trump has fiercely criticized. For the national anthem, the code states "all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart".

In 2016, football players from Watkins Mill High School followed Kaepernick's example and dropped to a knee. "I don't read the case that way, but I think a lot of schools have taken it as an invitation to say that you have no right to be a football player, and so we can take that right away from you at any time for any reason".

Echoing the position taken by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, the Lafayette Parish School System will not take a stance in regard to student-athletes protesting during the national anthem, LPSS chief administrative officer Joe Craig said Friday.

A Louisiana school district is requiring all its students to stand during the National Anthem when it's played at a sporting event or during an extracurricular activity - or face the consequences.

What the Big Jolt to Germany's Merkel Means to US, Russia, Greece
Oddly, the AfD picked up much support from regions comprising former East Germany, even though those areas have fewer immigrants. Many Germans see the rise of the AfD as a similar rejection of the status quo as votes for Brexit and Donald Trump a year ago .

In the letter, Bates writes that "continued failure to comply will result in the removal from the team".

Naturally, the ACLU slammed the school district for its announcement.

More: Parkway High alum to athletes: "Kneel". This almost half-century-old lesson is a startlingly appropriate rebuke to Principal Bates (who asserts without elaboration that any dissent would entail "disruption"), and is even more persuasive applied to the setting of a football field rather than a classroom.

Figueroa's interpretation of American excellence was quickly derailed when Clarksville Montgomery School District, which oversees West Creek High, learned of his comments.

An attorney for the district cited the 1943 Supreme Court decision that found forcing students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance would violate the rights of students who were Jehovah's Witnesses.

"What the United States Supreme Court has said that the schools will not continue to infringe the constitutional fundamental rights of their students".

"We actually talked about this past year before it blew up because we wanted to be on top of it, in case it happened", said Pribyl, whose school has 45 percent non-Caucasian student athletes.
