Gorkhaland Agitation: SI killed, three injured in police-GJM clash in Darjeeling

Additional director general of police (Law & Order) Anuj Sharma said, "The GJM has created a blue-print so that the unrest continues in the hills and the peace loving people there cannot lead a normal life".

The police conducted an early morning raid at Takvar area near Patlibash, after receiving an intelligence input that absconding GJM chief Bimal Gurung might be hiding there, the report added.

In a sudden flare up in West Bengal's northern hills, a police sub-inspector was killed and three others were injured during an exchange of fire between the security forces and the Bimal Gurung faction of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha here on Friday, police said. Six AK-47 rifles, a nine-mm pistol, almost 500 rounds of cartridges, explosives and bombs were recovered from the spot later. They were rushed to a local hospital, where Malik succumbed to injuries. The GJM faction has alleged that the arms recovered may have been planted by the state police. “We will not allow this to happen at any cost, even if we have to make sacrifices, ” he said.

The clashes ensued when police raided the area below Lepcha Bustee after receiving specific information that Grurung was camping in the area. He tried to enter Darjeeling and police went for him.

In connection to the attack on the police in Darjeeling last night, ADG Anuj Sharma said that they had received a tip-off that Bimal Gurung was planning to sneak into Darjeeling from the neighbouring state of Sikkim. The slain SI's body was later brought to Siliguri.
