Winx makes it 22 straight - just - with Cox Plate win

30 October 2017

Winx latest win sees her become just the second horse to win three successive Cox Plates, a feat previously achieved by the legendary Kingston Town.

The six-year-old notched her 22nd victory in a row with jockey Hugh Bowman delivering yet another stellar ride atop the crown jewel of Australian racing, with a narrow win over a gallant Humidor, who came close to running down the champ, and Folkswood back in third.

Directly on the Emirates, Waller added: "Whether she has another run this prep, when she goes overseas - if she goes overseas - it'll all unfold and be pretty obvious I would say".

"To be able to manage an animal like this and bring her back three years in a row to peak on one particular day, I think it goes unnoticed".

'She's a great horse and it's a privilege for me and my family to be part of this'. "She would give the race the X-factor and we've spoken to the owners so they can think about it". I have had an awesome career and Winx delivered me my first major group one in this exact race three years ago and she has now delivered me with my only other two.

Just as she's done in so many of her historic wins, Winx ambled up on the leaders, appearing as comfortable as ever.

Bowman said former Kiwi trainer Chris Waller deserved all the credit for guiding Winx on career that has netted an Australian record 15 group one wins. Seven horses signed up to race her with Humidor, the 13-1 shot domestically, her toughest challenger. "If she's still racing in Australia next year, we want her at the Valley".

The second-placed horse Humidor who put in a very courageous effort is part-owned by former All Black Mark Carter, and his brother Mark and sister Rachel.

"The beauty of Winx is she makes our job easier", he said earlier this week.

"Fortunately we got the upper hand and yeah, well done to the connections of all runners".

Trainer Chris Waller is due to fly into Melbourne on Tuesday to make a decision on whether the three-time victor of Australasia's weight-for-age championship will have a spring carnival swansong in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington in a fortnight. They have run second to a very good horse.

"She does love it here, there's no doubt about that", he said.
