Sessions Suddenly Remembers Russia Conversation He Said Didn't Happen

03 November 2017

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is facing renewed questions over how much he knew about Russian efforts to interfere with the USA election, after it was revealed this week that he attended meetings with a Trump campaign adviser who claimed to have extensive contacts with Russians.

Ryan said people care about the investigation, but "the reality is most Ohioans are very busy just trying to make ends meet".

Clovis, who was already serving as the senior White House adviser on the Agriculture Department, added that he will "continue to serve at the pleasure of you and the secretary of agriculture".

"Peskov also says that connections between former Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos and a man he believed to have links to the Russian Foreign Ministry did not prove any complicity by the Russian government".

Trump has previously denied that members of his campaign team had contact with Russian officials.

Nonetheless, the court filing on Papadopoulos is now being contrasted with long-disputed answers Sessions gave the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearing about Trump's campaign, including the exchange with Franken.

The professor and conservative radio talk show host from Iowa, who served as national co-chair of Trump's campaign, had come under intense fire since Papadopoulos's guilty plea was filed this week. Also there were Trump and his son-in-law and White House senior adviser Jared Kushner.

The White House did not comment Wednesday night, and messages to Clovis' attorney regarding the latest developments in the Russian Federation investigation were not returned.

Questions are swirling over Clovis' relationship with George Papadopoulos - the Trump campaign foreign policy adviser who has admitted to making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding his interactions with foreign officials close to the Russian government - and a trip Papadopoulos took during the election where he met with a Russian figure. Sessions has no clear recollection of Papadopoulos and doesn't recall any further interactions with him, including phone calls or emails, the person said. Likewise, he called Obama a "Maoist" and said Attorney General Eric Holder is a "racist black".

He added: "I certainly think it's a legitimate area of inquiry" for lawmakers to pursue.

Senate Agricultural Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kansas, told Politico that Clovis has been "a fully cooperative witness" in the Senate Intelligence Committee's investigation into Russian meddling.

The position for which Clovis was nominated has traditionally been held by individuals with advanced degrees in science or medicine.

"Jeff Sessions was the head of the national security operation" in Trump's campaign, Senator Richard Blumenthal of CT, a member of the Judiciary Committee, said in an interview.

Sekulow says: "The president has not indicated to me or to anyone else that I work with that he has any intent on terminating Robert Mueller".

"He may still have technically answered the question correctly", said Representative Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat.

"The clarity of the question and the answer could be easily challenged", Turley said in an email".

The special counsel's office has been calling witnesses for the last several months for both interviews at their Department of Justice offices in addition to testifying before a newly impaneled grand jury.
