Washington demands that RT should register as foreign agent by November 13

The status, which applies to several state-owned outlets operating in the USA including Japan's NHK and the China Daily newspaper, requires disclosure of the media organization's foreign funding.

"It deprives us of fair competition with other worldwide channels, which are not registered as foreign agents", said RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan.

"This requirement is discriminatory, it contradicts the principles of democracy and freedom of speech, it does not give us equal competition with other foreign TV channels that work in America without being registered as foreign agents", she said.

On Thursday, RT Managing Director Alexey Nikolov said at a meeting of the Provisional Commission of Russia's Federation Council (upper house of parliament) on Information Policy and Media Interaction that he had not registered as a foreign agent in the U.S. within the period of time set by the USA authorities.

"These are not media, but propaganda tools with 100 percent funding from the USA budget", Pushkov was quoted as saying.

Pyotr Tolstoy, a deputy speaker of the State Duma, suggested that one possibility is that media outlets affected by the new law could be required to include a statement identifying themselves as foreign agents on their social media pages. "It deprives us of fair competition with other global channels, which are not registered as foreign agents".

Twitter has already banned advertising from RT and Sputnik, another Russian news outlet.

The Russian parliament on Friday signaled that it will force some American news outlets working there to register as foreign agents.

RT, previously known as Russia Today, disputes that it is an agent of the Kremlin, arguing that it merely offers alternatives to mainstream news coverage.

RT has been singled out as a propaganda outlet in the wake of alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential vote.

Russian telecoms watchdog Roskomnadzor, for its part, proposed blocking the websites of foreign media groups and nongovernmental organisations, without any need of a court order.

"The US Department of Justice wheeled out a cannibalistic Monday deadline", she tweeted. Groups on the list are subject to tight scrutiny by officials and must place the words "foreign agent" on all their publications, a label that recalls Soviet-era denunciations of spies and fifth-columnists.
