Rahul Gandhi set take over as Congress president on early December

20 November 2017

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has called a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Monday morning, to notify the schedule for the election of her successor.

Analysts say that Rahul's election as the new Congress president just before the Gujarat polls will be an utterly bold move indicating the Congress party's election preparedness.

The prolonged suspense over Rahul Gandhi's elevation as the party president could be over prior to Gujarat polls.

The Election Commission has set a December 31 deadline for the party to complete the process of organisational elections.

Sources said the leadership renewed its plans to convene a meeting of its apex decision-making body earlier this week and finalised it on Saturday. The closed-door meeting of the CWC will be chaired by current Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who has been held the post for 19 years. The date of organisational poll is December 8 and counting is on December 11.

Chief minister Vijay Rupani on Friday accused Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi of lying and quoting false figures to attack the state government.

After which, as per reports, the Congress president and party vice-president were asked to file their reply to the plea on July 22.

Rahul's rise will also settle the wearying speculation about when the generational shift in the Congress hierarchy will come about. "The way Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji have been taking the country forward, also in changing the view how the world looks at India now, is remarkable". The lack of clarity led to Congress leaders refusing to talk definitively about the subject, after top office-bearers last month ventured to predict that it would happen soon after Diwali.
