India on Thursday demanded a sovereign guarantee from Pakistan to ensure the safety and well-being of the mother and wife of imprisoned former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, when they visit Pakistan to meet him.

Further, the MEA has also said they should not be questioned or harassed, and also that a diplomat from the Indian High Commission in Pakistan should be permitted to accompany them throughout their stay, NDTV reported.

Pakistan offered to permit Jadhav's wife to meet him last week.

Asserting that the offer of such a meeting does not absolve Pakistan of the violations of the Vienna Convention on consular access, he maintained that the charges against Jadhav were "farcical" and "concocted".

He informed that India has sought sovereign guarantee from the government of Pakistan to ensure safety, security of both Kulbhushan Jadhav's mother and wife.

Kumar said that while India has responded "positively" to the neighbouring country's offer to arrange a meeting between Jadhav and his wife, there was a "long-standing request from Jadhav's mother to visit Pakistan and meet her son".

We got a note verbale from the Pakistani side.

There is speculation that Pakistan has made the offer for the spouse's meeting because of the case before the ICJ.

A military court in Pakistan has sentenced Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav to death for alleged involvement in "spying" and "subversive activities". However, India has rejected all the charges and has since approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ) stating that Jadhav was forced to confess on camera.

Pakistan's foreign ministry on Saturday had confirmed receiving the response and said that it was being considered. India had put a condition that these two women shall be allowed to be accompanied by an Indian diplomat, including the time when the wife and mother meet Jadhav.
