Muhammad Wilkerson won't travel for Jets at Saints

17 December 2017

Wilkerson's future with the Jets is bleak. Soon, it could be over.

Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson was late to a team meeting on Friday, a source confirmed, and will not travel to Sunday's game against the Saints.

"I'm anxious about the guys that I'm coaching", Bowels said.

"I'm just anxious about the guys I'm coaching", Bowles said, when asked the same question. "With the defensive personnel, I think it's good to know some of these guys. I'm not anxious about Mo right now", he said.

"I made my decision", he said.

Bowles told Wilkerson's teammates of the decision in a team meeting.

Meanwhile, Kony Ealy and Xavier Cooper could see increased action in Wilkerson's place at New Orleans.

Likewise, Brian Fallon, Clinton's former campaign spokesman, tweeted: " This is a disgusting tweet". Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!" he posted on the social networking website.

For a franchise that shed big names with big salaries during the past year while trying to change the culture around the team, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Jets cut Wilkerson in the offseason.

Wilkerson carries a salary cap figure of $20 million in 2018, but the Jets would create $11 million in cap space (with $9 million in dead money attached) by releasing him.

Since signing his five-year, $86 million contract before 2016, Wilkerson has eight sacks in 28 games. It's not clear if that's also the reason for this decision, but Bowles said that Wilkerson and linebacker Darron Lee, who was inactive for the K.C. game, would have to earn trust back.

Now, Wilkerson will miss an entire game because he can't - or, more accurately, won't - show up on time to a simple meeting.

The 28-year-old has two All-Pro selections on his resume but hasn't been the same player the last two seasons. For a veteran of seven years in the National Football League, this has been a habitual problem for the past three seasons now.

Despite Wilkerson's lack of effort, multiple benchings and fines for no-shows and tardiness to practice to go along with his lack of production, head coach Todd Bowles has continued to trot Wilkerson out there on a weekly basis, even saying as recently as last week that he still views him as one of the leaders on this Jets team.
