President Trump's border wall coming to Laredo?

07 January 2018

"President Trump has said he may need a good government shutdown to get his wall", Durbin says.

The Trump administration's planned "border wall system" would ultimately include 864 miles of a "new main wall and 1,163 of a replacement or secondary barrier", Politico reported, citing information in a five-page document it obtained.

Support for the border wall in Congress remains tepid, and Trump's insistence on linking the controversial project to the Obama-era DACA program - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals - could complicate a deal aimed at shielding these young immigrants from deportation.

The administration's plan, per the document, is to almost double the amount of fencing along the border, from 654 miles now to around 1,000 in total.

In September, President Trump gave Congress 6 months to come up with a solution to protect as many as 800,000 people who are benefiting from the DACA program.

The requests complicate already strained negotiations between Republicans and Democrats.

Republican and Democratic leaders are also scheduled to meet with Trump at the White House on Tuesday to talk about immigration legislation. His priorities include tightening a family-based immigration policy that allows naturalized citizens and certain immigrants to petition for relatives to come to the USA and eliminating the Diversity Visa Lottery, a state department program that helps citizens of countries with historically low rates of immigration to come to the US.

They have steadfastly opposed Trump's call for building a southwestern border wall.

"We want DACA to happen", Trump said Saturday.

The episode prompted a shutdown warning from Durbin, with government funding scheduled to run out January 19 and a long-term budget will require Democratic votes.

The administration has now provided one of its most detailed blueprints of how the president hopes to carry out a signature campaign pledge. "With this demand, he seems to be heading in that direction".

Trump will host a bipartisan meeting early next week to discuss the issue.
