NFL, NFLPA to review how Panthers handled hit on QB Newton

09 January 2018

He's talking trash about Carolina players, retweeting Cam Newton memes and he even sent the Panthers quarterback a bottle of wine as a "thank you" for letting the Saints beat his team three times this season.

Though Newton went to the ground on his way to the sideline, he said it was because of an eye injury and not a head injury, per NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon: "I know it was a precautionary concussion protocol thing that happened, but it wasn't my head, it was my eye".

Newton exited Carolina's wild-card loss to the New Orleans Saints after taking a hit to the head in the fourth quarter. Newton made his way toward the sideline but dropped to his knees before getting there. "If he passes all phases of this exam and is cleared by the UNC (unaffiliated neurological consultant) and the team MD in charge of concussion care, then the player could return to the game". The Saints won the game, 31-26, sacking Newton on the game's final play.

Newton said after the game the problem was with his eye, not a head injury.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said he is very confident that the protocol was followed correctly.

Raiders officially announce hiring of Gruden as coach
He led the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title over Oakland the following season. Jon Gruden is the new coach of the Raiders, the team announced this evening.

This isn't the first time the Panthers have been investigated for how it has handled the protocol. A sideline concussion evaluation is not considered sufficient under those circumstances. But in revisions to its concussion policy announced December 29, the National Football League said it would "require a locker room concussion evaluation for all players demonstrating gross or sustained vertical instability (e.g., stumbling or falling to the ground when trying to stand)".

The league and the players union changed its concussion protocol last month after Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage returned to the field after having a concussion that left the quarterback's hands shaking after a hit.

Newton was evaluated in the medical tent on the Panthers' sideline.

Rivera did not believe Newton had not demonstrated any post-concussion symptoms Monday. "We wanted [Newton] to sit down to give [Anderson] a chance to warm up", Rivera said. After the Week 3 game, Jordan made some jokes about Newton's fashion choices.

"Carolina picked him, so the brothers could reunite", Jordan said. "We romped him good". And I think David Onyemata shut that door for him.
