Francis celebrates alum Greta Gerwig's Oscar nominations with Lady Bird

Greta Gerwig has become the fifth woman to have ever been nominated for the best director gong at The Oscars.

That's not the case for this year's Academy Awards, thanks to Greta Gerwig at Lady Bird's helm.

Just last month, the Golden Globes - a ceremony mostly hailed for the commendable manner in which it championed the TimesUp movement following the spate of sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood - handed Lady Bird the trophy for "Best Film - Comedy/Musical" without actually honouring Gerwig, the woman who made the assured debut such a deserving recipient. Still, Gerwig is just the fifth woman to ever be nominated in the category following Bigelow, Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation), Jane Campion (The Piano) and Lena Wertmüller (Seven Beauties), while Peele is now the fifth black director to ever be nominated after the aforementioned Daniels, John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins just last year. Bigelow wound up winning the award for her film The Hurt Locker, making her the first woman to ever win Best Director at the Oscars. The other nominees for director included Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk) and Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread). Gerwig admitted that she found the courage to go solo from her peers and the other female directors she has worked with.

Lady Bird is not Gerwig's first foray into directing.

23, 2018, the nominations for the 2018 Academy Awards were announced.

It was also nominated for awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild of America, Writers Guild of America and Broadcast Film Critics Association. However, Gerwig was the only woman with a realistic shot, given that the Academy tends to not get too excited about honoring crowd-pleasing superhero movies like "Wonder Woman".

According to the annual Celluloid Ceiling study by San Diego State University, while the number of female directors on the 250 highest-grossing films previous year inched slightly upward from 2016, to 11 percent from 7 percent, that amount was even with the level achieved in 2000, so the slight increase did not represent a significant gain.

Several women, Asian and black stars all received nods ahead of the familiar A-list faces. "I couldn't be prouder of my brilliant women who led the cast, Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf, and I am so thrilled that they were nominated for their handsome performances". Morrison also was the director of photography for Ryan Coogler's 2013 feature, "Fruitvale Station", and just completed work on his big budget superhero film "Black Panther".
