Padmaavat: Tepid response to bandh call in Guj; film not shown

27 January 2018

Those who are closely tracking the controversy over the Bollywood magnum opus by maverick director Sanjay Leela Bhansali have called it many things at the same time-a cultural war to register Rajput or Hindu supremacy or politics over Padmaavat (earlier named Padmavati) to woo a particular community (the Rajput to be precise).

Several multiplex owners in Rajasthan and Gujarat are not screening "Padmaavat" out of fear of attack on the theatre houses by the Karni Sena members opposing the release of the film in order to protect the dignity of Rani Padmini, media reports said.

Violence over the film reached the outskirts of India's capital just as New Delhi began to receive southeast Asian leaders for a major summit on Thursday, to be followed the next day by a parade and celebrations of the Republic Day.

Two people have been taken into custody after creating a ruckus and burning vehicles in protest against the film "Padmaavat" in Bhopal. In Ratlam, women members of Rajput Karni Sena submitted a memorandum to the district administration, seeking President Ram Nath Kovind's intervention to stop the film's release or permit them to end their lives. Police arrested 50 people in connection with the violence outside malls in Ahmedabad last night.

Reportedly, incidents of violence were reported from all over the country.

White House defends ad calling Dems 'complicit' in killings
Many Republicans feel that Democrats will pay a heavy political price for keeping the government shut down into the week. It's "next to impossible to strike a deal with the president because he can't stick to the terms".

The protests are expected to continue around the country.

"A mere hundred people can not create some problem and the state can not say there is a law-and-order problem", the court had told Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

"Our primary concern is the security of our employees and audiences". They also brunt tyres and staged demonstrations. Karni Sena supporters blocked the Delhi-Mumbai highway near Jaipur and some other places.

However, now that the film is making such good money, we hope that all those protesting against it can see the bright side and accept the film.

Along with the regular police force, 16 companies of paramilitary forces, such as the Border Security Force and Rapid Action Force, and nine companies of the State Reserve Police Force have been deployed in the state to maintain law and order, according to in-charge DGP Pramod Kumar. It also told the Shri Rajput Karni Sena that the filmmaker had issued disclaimer to the effect that it was a work of fiction. "Queen Padmini is like our goddess, no one will be allowed to insult our goddess and our Hindu pride".
