Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the de-facto Palestinian capital of Ramallah this week is a test for India's balancing act of relations with Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) government. The Palestinian Presidency, in a pre-arrival welcome statement, has described the upcoming visit as "historic and significant".
India has donated millions of dollars for a technology park that is under construction in Bir Zeit, a university town north of Ramallah.
A Palestinian Liberation Organisation leader said India's growing ties with Israel could benefit the Palestinians.
However, Modi's visit to Ramallah comes at a time when the U.S. has taken a stance to recognise the disputed territory of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel unilaterally while India chose to vote in favour of the UN General Assembly resolution opposing the move made by Washington. Over at least five decades, New Delhi has consistently supported the Palestinian cause, recognising it as a state in 1988.
India recently sided with Israel in the UN General Assembly, voting with a majority of nations to reject the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
