Google Shipped 3.9 Million Pixel Units Last Year

Pixel's user base mostly consists of hardcore Android fans who want the pure Android experience. Google seems to have improved its supply line issues with the Pixel 2, which has consistently been in stock.

Google launched the first Pixel phone in October 2016 and followed it up with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

But the Pixel isn't a massive commercial success for Google for the time being.

The Google Pixel smartphones were supposed to be Android's answer to Apple's iPhone.

Google won't say how many Pixel phones it shipped in 2017, but one analyst from the research firm IDC has a number: 3.9 million.

Apple sold 77.3 million iPhones in the Christmas quarter for an average of 849.450 iPhones a day, per ZDNet's math. Most people in the premium segment, which the Pixel phones target, have already become loyal to Apple, Samsung, or another brand.

LAPD Submits 3 More Cases of Alleged Sexual Assault by Harvey Weinstein
That brings to five the number of cases the Los Angeles County district attorney's office is looking into involving Weinstein. Harvey Weinstein could soon be facing criminal charges for alleged sexual abuse.

Google occasionally dabbles with pop-up stores for the holidays, and it has some dedicated displays inside electronics stores, but it's missing a standalone retail presence. Apple also has deals with all the major carriers in the United States, putting iPhones in even more retail locations with even more salespeople.

As Huawei and many Chinese phone makers have learned, the key to the USA market is through carriers.

Google still has a long way to go before its Pixel smartphones can hit figures that high-end smartphones from the likes of Samsung always do but it's seeing good progress.

In comparison, the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus sold 20 million devices in around four months a year ago. So let's look at the average for the calendar year 2017. Lower-end phones lead to more sales, and Samsung matches yearly Pixel shipments every 3.5 days.

According to Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, the company had technically doubled the number of units shipped year-on-year. HMD is now the world's sixth largest smartphone vendor.
