That measure included a show-cause penalty for Pitino, whom the NCAA criticized for failing to monitor McGee and ignoring multiple red flags; - Four years' probation, along with the vacation of those wins and appearances in the 2012 and 2013 Final Fours; - Show-cause penalties for McGee, who is no longer coaching.
Interim Louisville president Greg Postel said "We believe the NCAA is simply wrong to have made this decision".
"The NCAA's ruling can not change the accomplishments or the excitement generated by our Cardinals basketball team", Postel said. "And we made a strong case - based on NCAA precedent - that supported our argument".
Former director of basketball operations Andre McGee was found to have arranged "striptease dances and sex acts for prospects, student-athletes and others, and did not cooperate with the investigation". In one complaint, investigators described a partnership involving Louisville basketball coaches and several other parties, including a former executive at Adidas, the apparel company that sponsors Louisville's teams, in which they planned to funnel $100,000 to the family of a recruit in exchange for his commitment to the Cardinals.
Pitino has plenty of connections to the New England and MA area, as he played at UMass and coached Boston University, Providence College and the Boston Celtics before arriving at Louisville. That includes the 2013 national championship and the 2012 Final Four appearance.
At the time the penalties were announced, Postel said in a statement that the NCAA penalties "went beyond what we consider to be fair and reasonable".
The ruling - a product of a sex scandal at U of L - marks the first time in NCAA history that a men's basketball national championship has been banished from the record books.
Tennessee children have died from the flu this season
Vaccine effectiveness is tricky to measure, because there is no way to know how many vaccinated people never got ill at all. As of February 3, the CDC's surveillance report noted that 48 states continued to experience widespread flu activity .
Louisville had implemented those punishments in 2016, after the scandal came to light but before the N.C.A.A. could rule on it. The NCAA Committee on Infractions denied the University of Louisville's appeal.
Postel said Tuesday that Louisville offered complete cooperation with the NCAA investigation in this matter and that the NCAA's own rules encourage cooperation with the inference that penalties might be mitigated.
David Padgett has been serving as Louisville's acting head coach since Pitino's departure.
The decision by the governing body's Infraction Appeals Committee ruled that the NCAA has the authority to take away championships for what it considers major rule violations.
"Coach Pitino will make a statement tomorrow".
Postel said while the Katina Powell sex scandal was appalling, precedence for the case did not exist.
