Charles Matthews had a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds and MI survived a scare in the Big Ten Tournament, topping Iowa 77-71 in overtime on Thursday at New York's Madison Square Garden.
"We haven't had three guys in foul trouble in the first half, and our situation in the second half, with guys fouling out", MI coach John Beilein said. With a constant parade of missed foul shots and empty looks, the Wolverines' senior co-captain did enough to pull this out of the fire. "I think that was one of the first teams that really started switching ball screens". The rest of the Wolverines went 0 for 13. He also converted a 3 to put MI up 72-70 in overtime. "They were just better than us".
Ryan Kriener led the 12th-seeded Hawkeyes (14-19) with 14 points.
Sophomore guard Zavier Simpson deserves an honorable mention for scoring 12 points and playing solid defense as usual, but didn't have great shot selection and missed all four of his three-point attempts and went just 2-for-5 from the free-throw line.
And after Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw, Iowa's Jordan Bohannon buried a deep 3 from the top of the key to tie the game with 16 seconds left.

But the Hawkeyes succeeded in getting MI into significant foul trouble (Moritz Wagner, Abdur-Rahkman fouled out).
With junior forward Moritz "Moe" Wagner limited due to foul trouble and then fouling out like Abdur-Rahkman, Teske had to step in and provide huge minutes for the Wolverines. Abdur-Rahkman fouled out with 2:34 left in overtime, having scored nine points in 22 minutes.
Today, however, went much differently from those two regular season games. Tyler Cook added 12 and Luka Garza put in 11, as both big men were again efficient from the field.

CamelBak is based in Petaluma, Calif., apart from its Utah parent, and sought on Thursday to distance itself from Vista Outdoor. The decision came a few hours after REI's Canadian counterpart, Mountain Equipment Co-op, took a similar step.
Charles Matthews, who finished with a team-high 16 points, drained a deep 2-point jumper with 2:09 left in regulation to give MI a 67-61 advantage. That cut Michigan's lead to 53-51.
MI came to NY red-hot from 3-point range but missed its first 12 attempts and finished just 3-for-19 from deep. Scottie Lindsey led Northwestern in scoring this season with an average of 15.3 points per game while Derek Pardon led the Wildcats on the glass with 7.1 rebounds per game and Bryant McIntosh led Northwestern in assists with 5.1 assists per game this season.
Iowa: It was quite a few days for Bohannon. With AP Photos. The Big Ten opened a five-day run at Madison Square with Jordan Bohannon leading Iowa past IL 96-87 in the first game of the conference tournament.
MI was the pick of some to win the Big Ten tourney for a second year in a row. Bohannon had 11, including an ice-in-his-veins type of 3-pt shot that sent the game to overtime tied at 67.
"Just a couple of different possessions go a different way it could have been a totally different game", Bohannon said.
Last year, the Wolverines did it as a No. 8 seed.
These Wolverines are already comfortably in the NCAA field as an at-large.
Robinson failed to score in 11 minutes in that game.
