"We've had enough snow this year so the reservoirs should be up and they got a lot north of us so we should be in good shape enough snow, spring bring it on", said Mike Delaney of Springfield.

All New York City public schools will be closed on Wednesday, the mayor announced.

Highs will be in the upper 40s Friday - the sort of temperatures ideal for avoiding a fast, major melt, the National Weather Service said.

A lot of them were at New York's three hubs, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports, where about 70% of flights were canceled.

Airlines scrapped more than 4,400 flights within, to or from the United States, according to flight tracking website FlightAware, and more than 3,000 other USA flights were delayed as the latest "nor'easter" dumped snow and ice on New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, Reuters reported.

The storm weakened a bit in the early hours of Thursday, and Boston expected to escape with just a few inches of snow before it tapered off Thursday afternoon. Though forecasters expected Boston to get hit hard, the city remained largely unaffected after dry air chipped away at the precipitation shield along the northern and western part of the storm, The Boston Globe reported. Alan Aberden, 26, of East Orange, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, and receiving stolen property, according to the Essex County prosecutor's office. Throughout the day on Saturday we will see snow from Iowa to Virginia and rain from southern IL through to the Carolinas. Most locations will continue as a mix as the system continues to track to the northeast. "We want to encourage all New Yorkers right now, if you don't need to be out this evening, don't go out".

Up to six inches of snow is possible in some places, including the Indianapolis metro.

Eastern Long Island and eastern and central New Jersey could have 6 to 12 inches.

Snowfall was reported in Cincinnati, Louisville and through most of West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia by sunrise Wednesday.

The storm also unloaded snow on Virginia and West Virginia as it pushed into the Northeast. "So I feel bad for those little birds", she said.
