Kim Jong-un wants to write new history with South Korea

US President Donald Trump is expected to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in May after the two Koreas hold their first summit in more than a decade late next month.

Easing the Korean knot may prove even harder given that Tillerson's successor, Mike Pompeo, is known for his hardline approach to North Korea.

Kim made the comments during a two-day trip by the delegation led by Chung Eui-yong, the head of the South's national security office, reports the Guardian.

Moon Sung-muk, director of unification strategy at the National Strategy Institute, said that the China-North Korea summit was a result of "North Korea needing Chinese support in the upcoming summits with South Korea and the United States, and China wanting to hold influence over North Korea", adding that "North Korea may also hold a summit with Russian Federation along the context to gain advantage".

Japan's Asahi newspaper said today Japan had sounded out the North Korean government about a bilateral summit.

The summit date, announced by South Korean officials on Thursday after Mr. Kim returned to Pyongyang from a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, will bring a North Korean leader south of the demilitarized zone for the first time.

As part of the revised arrangement, the two countries also agreed to ensure that they do not devalue each other's currencies intentionally.

"And I may hold it up until after a deal is made with North Korea, does everybody understand that?"

By reintroducing China, which is the North's only major ally, as a major player, North Korea also gains leverage against South Korea and the United States, analysts say.

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi is spending two days in Seoul briefing South Korean officials on the results of the talks between Kim and Xi.

"We believe Kim's visit will help the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, ensure peace and security and solve problems regarding the Korean Peninsula through political negotiations and discussions", he said. Representatives of the two Koreas are also said to be set to gather on April 4 to sort out the details of the upcoming high-profile meeting. There would be no diplomatic track to speak of with North Korea were it not for the efforts of President Moon, and Trump repays him with a very public threat of extortion.

The official and another trade official said almost 30 South Korean negotiators had to move hotels repeatedly in Washington when their trip took longer than expected, at times finding themselves crammed into one hotel room to work on their negotiation strategy for the next day.

South Korean trade officials braved snowstorms, ate instant noodles to save time and spent weeks hotel-hopping in Washington as they raced to overcome major trade hurdles with their USA ally ahead of high-stakes nuclear discussions with North Korea. It sits squarely on the technical border between North and South Korea and is patrolled by troops from both sides of the conflict.

American officials have been reaching out to the North Koreans in hopes of hearing directly from them about Mr. Kim's intentions.

"This had to work well", a senior official at South Korea's presidential Blue House said. On Thursday, however, President Trump said he may hold up the agreement until a deal is reached with North Korea.

About 70 South Korean officials and technicians flew to Pyongyang on Thursday to set up the performance equipment.

Expanding on that further, trade law firm Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg said in a statement Thursday, "While USTR states that this agreement will include strong commitments on transparency and accountability, press sources note that it will not be subject to the FTA's dispute settlement provisions".
