Alex van der Zwaan will serve 30 days in prison and pay a fine of $20,000 as part of his sentence after he admitted to lying to federal agents who are investigating former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. "I apologize to my wife and my family", said van der Zwaan as he awaited sentencing.
Van der Zwann made a brief statement of contrition.
"This was more than a mistake. It was more than a lapse or misguided moment", Jackson said.
He is the son-in-law of Ukranian-Russian billionaire German Khan. Media reports have speculated that Person A's description matches longtime Manafort associate Konstantin Kilimnik, but Kilimnik has denied ties to Russian intelligence.
A Monday night court filing by Mueller's team revealed that the Department of Justice provided the special counsel explicit permission to investigate collusion between President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the Russian government last August.
"He lied", she said. "This glass was dropped on a very thick carpet and it has cushioned the blow", Jackson said.
Appearing in federal court Tuesday, Van der Zwaan told the judge, "What I did was wrong".Читайте также: Anthony Joshua v Joseph Parker: Betfair punters backing Kiwi to upset AJ
"It is unusual conduct to make a false statement, and then immediately provide proof of a false statement", Schwartz said, saying for if it were another defendant those tapes "could have found their way to the bottom of the Thames" River in London.
According to prosecutors, van der Zwaan was presented with emails that he had withheld from the special counsel during the initial interview.
Weissmann also said van der Zwaan's conduct demonstrated a "lack of morality", noting he also lied to his former employer and the US government.
Van der Zwaan worked with Gates and Manafort during his tenure in London at the prestigious law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, which fired him a year ago. Manafort was scheduled to enter a plea on new tax and fraud charges, brought by special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian interference investigation team, at the Alexandria federal court in Virginia, where he resides.
A hearing on the motion to dismiss charges against Manafort is set for April 19.In the meantime, he faces two pending trials related to his work in Ukraine: one in Virginia scheduled to begin in July and another in Washington set to take place in September.
The criminal case against van der Zwaan is not directly related to Russian election interference, the main focus of Mueller's probe. Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos also have pleaded guilty.
When Rosenstein tapped Mueller for the position previous year, he gave Mueller the authority not only to investigate "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated" with Trump's campaign, but also to examine "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
