New iPhones may have curved screens and touchless controls

It is also working on new features that would improve recent versions of the smartphone - including a curved screen and touchless controls. Apple is also working on new screen technology, known as MicroLED, but that's at least three to five years away, Bloomberg News reported last month.

This would let you perform some tasks with your iPhone by moving your finger close to the screen - without actually tapping it.

Although the OLED panel of the iPhone X curves at the bottom, that's mostly hidden from owners of the device - the objective is exclusively to make the bottom bezel as small as possible, by having the necessary screen drivers "under" it.

In its report, Bloomberg notes that both features are only in an experimental phase and that they may not necessarily come to new iPhones.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will get its current suppliers to switch to multi-FPCBs or increase the supplies, or replace the suppliers altogether.

Samsung developed a feature called Air Gestures that allows users to answer calls and swipe through web pages by waving their hands across the top of the phone.

According to Bloomberg, these displays will gradually curve inward from top to bottom, where as every iPhone model in the past, with the exception of the iPhone X, have used flat displays. Gurman indicated that the company is developing a new "touchless gesture control" and a curved screen for the future iPhone models. The new OLED iPhone X will have a screen size of 6.5 inches as compared to the previous iPhone X size 5.8 inch. If it's worth anything, though, my best guess would be us seeing the curved screen first.

Apple's touchless gestures will be different here as well. As Apple analyst Neil Cybart of Above Avalon pointed out in 2016, Apple rarely spends more than $3 billion on research and development in a full year, even four or five years ago. It is however said to enable brighter yet thinner and less power-hungry displays, which would explain things like Apple's LuxVue takeover in 2014 and the establishment of a secret facility for the technology just 15 minutes from Apple Park in Cupertino.
