Liverpool boss Klopp explains Salah derby absence

09 Апреля 2018

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has left the Egyptian on the bench for today's Goodison Park clash, with Salah still recovering from the groin injury which forced him off against Manchester City on Wednesday night. I am absolutely OK, it's not the best day in my life but let's carry on.

The Reds rode out a late push from the hosts to try and wrest all three points at Goodison Park, but Klopp's men held firm to pick up a deserved point.

They did, though, extend their unbeaten run in Merseyside Derbies to 17 matches, as Seamus Coleman and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both failed to take late Everton chances.

Without the attacking threat of Salah, Liverpool struggled to pose much danger in the final third as Sadio Mane, Solanke and Danny Ings - starting his first game in 916 days - all struggled to find room.

Without star man Salah, the Reds struggled to break down a dogged Everton defence and were hanging on at the end as the Toffees twice went close to a late victor. All game, none of us could understand why they couldn't come down this side. His five changes to the team for the 231st Merseyside derby showed where his priorities lay.

Yet Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius still needed to be alert, making perhaps the save of the game when he tipped away Yannick Bolasie's 25-yard curler bound for the top corner in the first half.

Tosun went close again on 87 minutes but his header off Theo Walcott's cross failed to trouble Karius. Subs: Idrissa Gana Gueye (for Rooney, 57) 6, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (for Bolasie, 61) 6, Beni Baningime (for Davies, 79) 5.

"I thought we did really well first half, at the end we were hanging on a little but it's normal, we played an intense game", the 24-year-old told Sky Sports News.

Even though Everton did enjoy bursts of pressure, Cenk Tosun was a frustrated figure up front for the most part.

The flow of the game did not change in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, either, with the visitors controlling things but failing to make their superiority truly count. Most obvious, Everton generally lacked quality and Liverpool lacked their usual lustre.
