Russell Crowe 'divorce' auction rakes in over $2.8 million dollars

Russell split from his wife Danielle five years ago, and chose to sell off their belongings and bring closure to their life together.

And in a move which has thrilled fans of the actor, Russell marked it by holding an auction called The Art of Divorce in Sydney yesterday.

And the auction of some 227 items has given him further reason to recall the day as a red-letter day.

Among the biggest selling items, the 128-year-old Italian violin he learned to play before he starred in the 19th century war drama Master And Commander.

The breastplate he wore for his death scene in the film sold for Aus$125,000 while a wooden training sword went for Aus$20,000 and a metal one for Aus$70,000.

A replica Roman chariot from the same movie, in which Mr. Crowe played the general-turned-gladiator Maximus, thought to be worth up to $10,000, was sold for $65,000.

Mounted Mosasaur skull, late Cretaceous period - $65,000.

A pair of black leather wrist cuffs was snatched for $32,000. Crowe donned the boxers and the jockstrap in the 2005 film, "Cinderella Man".

Two life-sized prop horses from Gladiator - $5,500 each.

Crowe livestreamed the auction on Facebook, and bids were taken by Sothebys Australia in person, online, and by phone from around the world.

Crowe told an Australian morning television show that the idea behind the sale was to "turn something that was a little bit bleak into something joyful".

Asked why he was getting rid of the items, Russell said: 'Number one, I have a vast collection of things.

Among items he admitted he struggled to part with, Crowe pointed to the concert violin, made in Milan in 1890, he used in duets with his friend, ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin, in Master and Commander.

The numbers were said to be significant to Crowe because they can be arranged 299, which was his highest score in Test cricket.

The 54-year-old movie star had chose to auction off some of his most prized possessions, including iconic memorabilia, costumes and props from his Hollywood career, as a way of marking his split from Danielle Spencer in 2012.

A pair of 18th century dueling pistols fetched $26,000 or roughly $20,000 United States dollars, and a 2001 Mercedes S-Class that served as a wedding auto in Crowe's April 2003 nuptials to Spencer - and has more than 62,000 miles - sold for $28,000 AUD or roughly $21,000 USD.
