Trump lawyer forced to reveal another client: Sean Hannity

17 April 2018

Late-night hosts didn't pull any punches on Sean Hannity following reports earlier on Monday that the Fox News host was a client of President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

Cohen was in court to ask the judge to limit the ability of federal prosecutors to review documents seized from his offices and home last week as part of a criminal investigation, which stems in part from a probe into possible collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and Russian Federation. Cohen has been under criminal investigation and FBI agents last week raided his home and other locations.

Attorneys for Cohen and Trump are seeking to block prosecutors from examining items seized in the raids, arguing that at least some of the material is protected by attorney-client privilege.

Trump had branded the Federal Bureau of Investigation raids as an "attack on our country".

Wood ordered on Friday that Cohen's attorneys produce a list of all the people they claim are his legal clients by Monday, which may in itself lead to heated disputes in the courtroom in lower Manhattan. Addressing Hannity's comments about Cohen, Kimmel said, "It's interesting, he has a lawyer he doesn't pay".

"First of all, Sean, I want to say that I really think that you should have disclosed your relationship with Cohen when you talked about him on this show", Dershowitz said, unprompted.

At first, he said that he might have given the attorney a few bucks, then later, he said that his conversations with Cohen did not revolve around a third party, like what happened to Trump.

Cohen's and Trump's attorneys have argued that the raids were inappropriate, with the president's team saying in a filing this week that move was "disquieting to lawyers, clients, citizens, and commentators alike".

"Yeah, it turns out Michael Cohen's secret client was Sean Hannity, which I'm sorry, is not a good look", Noah said with a chuckle. The conservative media figure, who seemed taken aback by the disclosure as he addressed it on his syndicated radio program Monday afternoon, eventually said most of the advice related to real estate.

Sean Hannity was typically bellicose.

One was Trump. Another was Elliott Broidy, a Trump fundraiser who resigned from the Republican National Committee on Friday after it was revealed that he paid $1.6 million to a Playboy Playmate with whom he had an extramarital affair. "Lanny, we have attorney-client privilege, isn't that true?"

"The seized materials relating to the president must be reviewed by the only person who is truly motivated to ensure that the privilege is properly invoked and applied: the privilege-holder himself, the President", Hendon wrote in court papers filed Sunday.

Daniels told reporters after the court session that she showed up to make sure that the seized records are not destroyed.

The search sought information on a variety of matters, including a $130,000 payment Cohen made to porn actress Stormy Daniels, who says she had sex with Trump in 2006.

"In terms of perception of fairness - not fairness itself, but perception of fairness - a special master might have a role here", Wood said.

Cohen is "being investigated for criminal conduct that largely centers on his personal business dealings", Thomas McKay, an assistant U.S. attorney, said in a court filing. I never retained him in the traditional sense as retaining a lawyer.

The search warrant authorizing the Cohen raid indicated that prosecutors were looking into potential bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations, sources told CNN last week.
