It seems that only the start of the upcoming NFL regular season will end the speculation of yet another comeback for three-time NFL MVP quarterback Brett Favre. The most recent speculation came from the Miami Dolphins as they were on the lookout for a veteran quarterback to come in and be the starter this season, but apparently the Dolphins either decided against it or Favre had no intentions to come out of retirement to play for Miami.
Whatever the case was, the rumors were squashed and Brett Favre remained retired. Even though there are just about two more weeks left before the start of the NFL regular season, the Brett Favre saga continues as it appears that the Indianapolis Colts could be interested in bringing him in if four-time NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning can’t start in Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
Ironically enough, Peyton Manning is the closest active quarterback in the league to Brett Favre’s NFL record for consecutive starts. With 227, Manning is second all-time in the NFL in consecutive starts just behind Farve, but that is in serious jeopardy at this point in time since it looks like he might miss Week 1 and perhaps even Week 2 if his rehab continues the way it has.
Obviously, this is all speculation with the Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay possibly just having fun with the situation and the media with tweets about being in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Personally, there would be no better player to backup Peyton Manning at this point in time than Brett Favre, but I believe this is a stretch as Manning won’t be out for long and Favre probably wouldn’t make a comeback for anything less than the starting role in the NFL.
One thing is for sure though; the Colts could be in trouble if Peyton Manning doesn’t get back to form sooner rather than later. With no reliable backup, Indianapolis will almost certainly struggle on offense in the first few weeks of the NFL regular season.
