Coming into All-Star weekend in Los Angeles, the two-time defending NBA champion Lakers had lost three straight games and just suffered their most disappointing loss of the season to the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers.

With all these negative vibes surrounding the defending champs as they were set to host the All-Star weekend at Staples Center, the consensus around the league was the Lakers are in trouble and were in need a big turnaround if they expect to compete with the best of the best in the second half of the NBA regular season.

With that being said and the fact that Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol were going to represent the Los Angeles Lakers as Western Conference All-Stars, the Lakers superstars were set to put on a show. Even though Pau Gasol came off the bench, he made a big impact with his 17 points which lead all scorers off the bench for the West.

Kobe Bryant on the other hand was determined to make history on Feb. 20 at Staples Center as he could tie NBA great Bob Pettit with his fourth NBA All-Star MVP award. In the first half, Kobe was on fire leading all scorers with 21 points heading into halftime, but the Black Mamba didn’t stop there as he was ready to lead the West to victory in the second half.

Ultimately, Kobe finished with a game-high 37 points and 14 rebounds and won his fourth All-Star game MVP. LeBron James led the way for the East and made history as well with the second triple-double in an All-Star game history (Michael Jordan had one in 1997). With 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, LeBron put on a show in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Kobe and the West as they went on to beat the East 148-143.
