Saturday’s game between the USA and Ghana was a knockout round – round of 16. One team would proceed to the Finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup while one team would head home disappointed. This year, for a second consecutive time, the USA was eliminated from this year’s World Cup by Ghana.
Ghana beat out the USA Saturday night 2-1. In just the fifth minute of the match, Kevin Prince Boateng was able to get the ball away from Ricardo Clark and scored from about 16 yards off USA’s goalie Tim Howard. This put Ghana ahead early in the match.
Then, the USA was able to come back for a moment when Landon Donovan achieved a score during the game’s 62nd minute by means of a penalty kick. This was the only score the USA team was able to achieve during the head-to-head match June 26 against Ghana.
USA was unable to tie again after Asamoah Gyan was able to score a goal over Tim Howard with 3 minutes into an overtime, which was the first time ever that the USA team has played into overtime in a World Cup match.
The USA almost tied the match for a second time during the game’s 98th minute of the match but was unable to successfully do so. They were unable to find any type of comeback during the match and ended up with a disappointing loss and no advance to the next stage of the World Cup tournament.
Ghana, on the other hand, is now the lone African team that will see the next stage of this World Cup tournament and will be going head-to-head with Uruguay in Johannesburg on Friday for the quarterfinals. Who do you think will win the quarterfinal round and advance to the next stage of this year’s tournament – Ghana or Uruguay?
