Ryan Madson, closer and relief pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, was placed on the DL for 15 days due to a broken right big toe.  The placement on the DL will allow for Madson to fully recover from the injury.  He was placed on the list immediately Thursday after dealing with the broken toe injury Wednesday after the game against the Giants in which the Phillies won.

Madson has been closing for the Phillies for the past month, the entire first month of the MLB season of 2010. Brad Lidge had been on the disabled list since the start of the season for a recovery from surgery on his right elbow as well as knee surgery.  While Lidge was recovering, Madson took over the role of the closer for the Philadelphia Phillies. Yesterday, the Philadelphia Eagles agreed to a contract with quarterback Kevin Kolb for a one-year extension.  This means that the contract will remain intact through next year’s season, 2011.  This specific contract will guarantee more than $12 million to Kolb over the course of the next two years.  Specific details of the contract extension have not yet been disclosed but Kolb made an official announcement on Thursday afternoon at the team’s training facility.

When Donovan McNabb was traded from the Eagles to the Washington Redskins, Kevin Kolb became the Eagles’ starter.  Kolb is a three-year veteran and the Eagles believe that he can withstand command.

25-year-old Kolb has proven that he can uphold the quarterback position when needed.  Last year when the Eagles played against Carolina, McNabb was injured and Kolb stepped in to take his position as quarterback in the game. Continue Reading…

Jair Jurrjens, starter for the Atlanta Braves, left the game against the St. Louis Cardinals today after a left hamstring strain in the first inning of the game.  Coach wanting to go ahead and take Jurrjens out of the game to prevent any further injury to his hamstring, especially since he did make a mention of it just a few days ago during conditioning sprints.

Prior to his injury in the first inning, Jurrjens was able to throw successful pitches and retire two batters right off the bat.  Matt Holliday was hit with a pitch and then a single was allowed for Colby Rasmus.  A three-run homer run was given to Cardinals’ third baseman rookie David Freese.  This three-run homer was the third consecutive start for Jurrjens where he allowed three runs. The PGA Tour second event this season, the Quail Hollow Championship, has commenced and Tiger Woods has gotten off to a great start early this morning in the first round of the Championship.  It was a bit chilly to begin with this morning but Woods hasn’t let the weather affect his playing ability thus far.

He started off with a birdie for the 10th hole at par-5; however, he quickly made up for that two holes afterward with a bogey.  He was approximately fifty yards from the green.  He was able to pitch up to about 12 feet but then he was unable to close the deal with the par putt. In Woods’ first six holes, he is even par. Continue Reading…

After Scott Sicko went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, he was going to retire and not play in the NFL.  However, this decision has appeared to have changed as of late.

Sicko, a tight tend from New Hampshire, originally had plans to retire immediately following this past weekend’s draft when he was not chosen by a team.  He admitted that the NFL had always been a huge dream of his; however, he had a back-up plan.  If he was not selected and/or fortunate enough to play in the NFL, he was going to pursue another dream – teaching college American History. Apparently, the Oakland Raiders are very close to cutting loose JaMarcus Russell.  The release of Russell from the Raiders is probably going to happen sometime this week, possibly even sometime this evening. This is something that everyone has been waiting for ever since this past Saturday when the Raiders acquired new quarterback Jason Campbell.

Russell, from LSU, was the Raiders first draft pick in the 2007 NFL draft, but they have probably regretted their decision ever since.  Since being drafted, Russell has provided nothing but disaster even though he is set to make approximately $9 million this year and next year.  Moreover, he weighs more than a usual quarterback would at more than 300 pounds.  Continue Reading…

The 15-day disabled list now includes the name of left-hander Brett Anderson of the Oakland Athletics.  He was placed on the DL due to elbow inflammation and a strain in the left forearm.  The final decision to put Anderson on the DL after he complained of tightness in his left elbow after his last start was when he threw on the side once.

Anderson came to agreement with a contract on April 16, just eleven days ago, that consisted of a four-year $12 million deal and includes team options for both 2014 as well as 2015.  The deal could ultimately reach a remarkable $31 million.  22-year-old Anderson is currently 1-1 with an ERA of 2.35 within four starts.  This is very first time on the disabled list in his baseball career. This Major League Soccer season will be a season without David Beckham.  More than likely, Beckham will not be able to resume playing until sometime this November more than likely.   He originally anticipated on returning in September since his recovery was anticipated to take about six months but his recovery is roughly two months behind hence the now estimated November return.

34-year-old Beckham suffered an injury of the Achilles tendon.  This Achilles tendon injury prevented him from participating in his fourth World Cup with England. He underwent surgery just last month when he ruptured a tendon whilst at AC Milan on loan.  Continue Reading…

According to some media reports, the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to let go John Henderson today from the team.  Henderson is a former Pro Bowl and was the team’s defensive tackle.  Henderson has been with the Jaguars and only the Jaguars for his entire NFL career, which he started by being drafted by the Jaguars in 2002.  He has been a starting defensive tackle since the 2002 draft and has played every game in these past eight seasons except for four of them.  Henderson’s contract still had $11 million and two years remaining.  The Jaguars felt at ease enough to release Henderson as well as his contract and rely very heavily on the rookies that were chosen early in the NFL Draft last week.  Continue Reading…
