Penguins Re-Sign Cooke for a Deal Worth More Than $5 Million
Added June 22nd, 2010 by Stacy

On July 1, Pittsburgh Penguins’ forward Matt Cooke would have become an unrestricted free agent.  Back in the summer of ’08, Cooke was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent and has been one of the Penguins’ top killers for penalties (alongside Jordan Staal, of course!) as he recorded 106 penalty minutes this past season alone.

Cooke had 15 assists in addition to his 15 goals this past season for his 79 appearances as well as +17 rating.  He has played in 11 NHL seasons with three different teams – his current and most recent team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals as well as the Vancouver Canucks, who he made his NHL debut with back in ‘99. Jozy Altidore will be good to go against Algeria despite stomach bug
Added June 22nd, 2010 by Scott

The United States national soccer team has exceeded expectations up to this point in the 2010 World Cup, they may have only drawn the first two games they have played in the tournament against England (1-1) and Slovenia (2-2), but they still have a chance to advance to the knockout stage with a win over Algeria on Wednesday.

Throughout the first two games of the 2010 World Cup, Landon Donovan and company have struggled to put score goals in the early going as they have had to come from behind in both matches against England and Slovenia. Continue Reading…

Is Chris Paul on the trading block?
Added June 22nd, 2010 by Ryan

This past NBA regular season, the New Orleans Hornets had arguably their worst season in recent memory as they just couldn’t get anything going with any consistently  and saw head coach Byron Scott get the boot and superstar point guard Chris Paul battle injuries all season long.

Not only were the New Orleans Hornets ravaged with injuries and going through a head coaching change this past season, but they also missed the playoffs and seemed to have little hope for the future moving forward. Continue Reading…

Oakland’s Jake Fox Headed to Baltimore in Trade
Added June 22nd, 2010 by Stacy

While Jake Fox has been designated for assignment by the Oakland A’s, Baltimore has already uttered some interest in the A’s outfielder.  It appears that he will likely be headed to the Baltimore Orioles.

Fox was designated for assignment approximately 10 days ago and 10 days is the time frame for a trade after being designated for assignment.  When he was designated, the 28-year-old Fox had a batting average of .214 with an on-base percentage of .264, which counted for the 106 appearances that he made.  As for last season, Fox was hitting .259 with 44 RBI’s and 11 home runs in his 82 games. Portugal scores seven goals on North Korea
Added June 21st, 2010 by Ryan

The 2010 World Cup has been extremely unpredictable so far as only a handful of teams have actually lived up to the hype heading into the tournament. The one team that hasn’t seemed to have missed a step is the tournament favorite in Brazil, who just recently dominated Didier Drogba and the Ivory Coast with a 3-1 victory, but other teams like Spain and England have really struggled in the early going.

Another team thought to go far in the tournament, but has found it hard to live up to expectations so far is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Heading into the tournament, Ronaldo and company were thought to give teams like Brazil and Spain a run for their money, but after a 0-0 draw against Ivory Coast, many people started to question whether or not Portugal had what it took to advance to the next round. The Boston Celtics may have lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals recently, but it would be hard to argue that they didn’t have one of the most successful seasons in recent memory. Even though the franchise seems to be headed back in the right direction once again, the Celtics have a lot of unanswered questions moving forward.

Not only are three of the Boston Celtics most important players in Rasheed Wallace, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce possibly on their way out via free agency or retirement, but head coach Doc Rivers is also still uncertain about his future with the team. Continue Reading…

Portugal routes North Korea with second half scoring drives
Added June 21st, 2010 by Scott

Portugal ended a severe scoring drought today by beating the North Korean team 7-0, which places Portugal in nice shape to get to the next round of 16 teams. “It was a great day for Portugal and Portuguese football,” said the coach, Carlos Queiroz.

The route started with Meireles’ 29th-minute goal that tied up the match, followed by Simao, Almeida and Tiago, all of whom scored rather early in the second half of play. Continue Reading…

Lakers head coach Phil Jackson to decide on future before June 27th
Added June 18th, 2010 by Ryan

The Los Angeles Lakers have won their second straight NBA title with a thrilling game seven victory over their bitter rivals in the Boston Celtics. Even though the Lakers dominated throughout the majority of the playoffs, they were seriously tested by the Celtics in the NBA Finals and won arguably their toughest NBA title in recent memory. This was a great series.

This second consecutive NBA title for the Los Angeles Lakers was the fifth for Kobe Bryant and the 11th for head coach Phil Jackson (six with the Chicago Bulls, five with the Los Angeles Lakers). Last season the Zen Master broke the record for most NBA title won by a head coach with 10 beating out the Boston Celtics Red Auerbach and now Jackson has distanced himself even more from Red with another NBA title. These NBA playoffs have been entertaining to say the least with a lot of surprises and underdogs going much further than anticipated. Even though many people were expecting to see a Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Finals matchup with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James battling it out for an NBA title, the Boston Celtics were able to do the seemingly impossible and beat the two best teams in the Eastern Conference to get back to the NBA Finals for the second time in three years.
