Every single year in the NCAA Tournament, there is one or two teams that steal the spotlight as they’re able to defy the odds consistently and pull off upset after upset over the highest seeds in the tourney. This season the VCU Rams (11) is one of those teams as they have been unbelievable in the first three rounds of the 2011 NCAA Tournament as they have been arguably one of the most dominant teams during March Madness with three straight wins over the USC Trojans, Georgetown Hoyas and the Purdue Boilermakers.
As one of the eight teams in the First Four round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, the VCU Rams (11) weren’t thought to do much of anything during March Madness as they were barely able to get into the tournament as it is. Despite being in the underdog role throughout the entire tournament, they have been as tough to beat as any other team in this tourney.
In the third round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, the VCU Rams (11) had their work cut out for them as they were set to go up against the Purdue Boilermakers (3). Even though Purdue didn’t exactly face the stiffest competition against St. Peter’s in their first matchup of the 2011 NCAA Tournament, they were blindsided in the third round against a motivated VCU squad that had their eyes set on reaching the Sweet 16.
Usually, when a lower seed gives a much higher seed a run for their money, the game is very close, but that wasn’t the case in this matchup. Not only were the Rams able to advance to the Sweet 16, but they absolutely crushed the Boilermakers by blowing them out 94-76.
This was an impressive win to say the least, but the VCU Rams (11) aren’t done yet as they will have to continue their run with a Sweet 16 matchup against the Florida State Seminoles (10).
