The Atlanta Falcons participated in a scrimmage Friday night, which was held at a local high school, in which wide receiver Michael Jenkins sustained an injury to his right shoulder.  This injury will reportedly keep him off the field for about four to six weeks.

Jenkins says that his shoulder feels all right but he did not practice with the team on Saturday.  Specific details of the injury have not been disclosed, such as whether Jenkins’ shoulder was dislocated or separated.  In addition, details as to whether or not the wide receiver would need surgery performed on his right shoulder were not disclosed either.

This is the 7th season for the 6-foot-4 wide receiver.  He’s made 92 appearances and recorded 235 interceptions for a total of 3,007 yards along with 18 touchdowns.

Preseason for the Falcons opens this Friday night at which time Atlanta will play Kansas City.  The Atlanta Falcons open up their regular season on September 12 at Pittsburgh.  What this means is that if Jenkins can heal his shoulder (provided that it doesn’t require surgery) within just a few weeks then he’ll likely only miss several of the team’s preseason games; however, if he ends up missing the entire six weeks or more, he will miss the preseason games along with two or three of the regular season games, depending on the healing of his shoulder.

With that being said, the Falcons are going to have to think ahead and look for a replacement, who will be opposite wideout Roddy White, for Jenkins until he can return.  Sources say that Harry Douglas will fit the bill and is likely to be the one to fill this starting spot.  Douglas is coming back from knee surgery.  Apart from Douglas, another candidate for Jenkins’ position would be 6-foot-2 rookie wide receiver Kerry Meier.
