After being such a large disappointment to the New England Patriots, the Denver Broncos have now acquired running back Laurence Maroney, who will go on the free agent market after this season, from the Patriots.

Maroney was originally drafted in the first round and 21st overall in the 2006 NFL Draft.  Since being drafted by the Patriots in 2006, he has been battling injury after injury as well as ineptness.  He has had the opportunity to participate in 65 regular season games for his career but have only appeared in 45 of those.  He has recorded 21 touchdowns and rushed for nearly 2,500 yards. His career-best was in 2007 for 835 yards.  Last season, Maroney recorded nine touchdowns and 757 rushed yards.

The soon-to-be free agent running back only performed in two of the four pre-season games for the Patriots and Maroney did not participate in Sunday’s game, while still with the Patriots, against the Cincinnati Bengals in which the Patriots won 38-24 due to an injury to his thigh.  Fred Taylor, the star of the game for the Patriots with 14 carries for 71 rushed yards, will now be the lead running back with Maroney out of the picture.

What did New England get out of this deal?  According to ESPN, the Patriots sent Maroney over to Denver as well as a sixth-round draft pick out of next year’s draft and the Patriots received a fourth-round pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

For now, the Broncos have not made a corresponding roster move to make room for Maroney.  There are currently four running backs active on the Broncos roster – Andre Brown, Knowshown Moreno, Correll Buckhalter and Lance Ball.
