The New Orleans Saints came into their Monday Night Football matchup with the division rival Atlanta Falcons looking to lock up the NFC South division title and improve their chances of a first-round bye in the playoffs. Even though the division title was supposed to be the only thing superstar quarterback Drew Brees was thinking about heading into Week 16, the media was hyping up the potential of a record-breaking performance by the one-time Super Bowl champion as he was just 305 passing yards away from breaking Dan Marino’s single-season passing record of 5,084 passing yards.
With one more game on the New Orleans Saints schedule before the NFL regular season was officially over, Drew Brees breaking the record was basically a foregone conclusion as there was no way he would throw less that 300+ passing yards in two games combined. Despite that being the case, Saints fans wanted their star quarterback to get it done on Dec. 26, 2011 in the Superdome in the Big Easy.
On his final pass of the game, Drew Brees threw a 9-yard touchdown to pass to running back Darren Sproles which officially put him passed Miami Dolphins’ legend Dan Marino for the single-season passing record by just two yards. With one more game left, Brees could add to that record by 100 to 300 more yards passed Marino.
Now the New Orleans Saints will try to wrap up the second seed in the NFC Conference and a first-round bye in the playoffs with a win over the up-and-coming division rival Carolina Panthers in Week 17. Even though Cam Newton and company will pose a bit of a challenge to the Saints’ defense, New Orleans should get an early lead and have time to rest their starters while having a great chance of getting the second seed in the NFC.
