With the start of the Carolina Panthers training camp nearing, there has been speculation whether quarterback Jimmy Clausen would attend. The speculation can end today as he’ll be there. Wednesday, Clausen and the Panthers reached an agreement that would allow him to join the team for training camp practice, which starts today. Clausen’s agent and the Panthers had to work through the night but eventually came to agreement on a deal that work swell for the team as well as Clausen.
Clausen, a former Notre Dame quarterback and the 48th overall 2010 NFL Draft pick, and the Panthers came to agreement for a four-year contract. According to various media outlets, the four-year deal is worth a maximum of $6.3 million with $2.533 million guaranteed, which also guarantees that there will be no rookie holdouts. Out of the 10 draftees that Carolina drafted this year, Clausen was the last one to reach an agreement with the Panthers and to sign.
Clausen was originally one of the top 10 prospects entering into the 2010 NFL Draft but surprised everyone when he fell down the charts to being drafted in the second round of the draft as the 48th pick overall. As far as training camp and depth goes, he’s not on the top of the list but comes in right behind Matt Moore. He may also be behind Hunter Cantwell coming in as a third-string quarterback; however, if he proves himself well he could be up for the starting job and fighting Moore for dibs.
Clausen will sign his four-year contract and be on his way to training camp today. The three-year Notre Dame starting quarterback will definitely be putting his experience and skill in front to challenge Moore for the starting quarterback position this year with the Panthers. He is definitely one to keep your eye on this season.
