There is no doubt at this point in the NFL season that the San Francisco 49ers are the most improved team in the league. With the addition of head coach Jim Harbaugh to the sidelines, there has been no stopping the 49ers this season as they have transformed from a perennial bottom feeder in the NFC Conference to the winners of the NFC West division with an impressive 12-3 record.
As arguably the most sought after head coach in the NFL off-season, Jim Harbaugh had plenty of suitors throwing buckets of money in his direction, but the former coach of Stanford decided to stay near the Bay Area by going with San Francisco. This move one just one of two made by the 49ers that was supposed to help turnaround the team in the near future with the other move being the signing of free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
With a successful run with the New York Jets over the past couple of years, the consensus around the NFL was that despite his baggage Edwards would be one of the top free agent wide receivers in the NFL off-season. Even though he was given offers by multiple teams including the Jets, Edwards signed with the 49ers in hopes of becoming the number one option in the passing game for quarterback Alex Smith.
Unfortunately, the Braylon Edwards experiment in San Francisco never really worked out as he played in just eight games (five starts) and caught only 15 passes for 181 yards. Not only are those pretty weak numbers for a guy that signed a one-year deal worth $3.5 million, but he also failed to catch a single touchdown pass.
So with just one week left in the NFL regular season, the San Francisco 49ers have decided to part ways with Braylon Edwards by cutting him from the roster.
