As always, the NFL’s biggest game has been surrounded with all sorts of hype and media exposure in the two weeks heading towards Super Bowl XLV, but the one headline dominating the rest is the health of Steelers’ Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey’s ankle injury.
Even though the Pittsburgh Steelers have a viable backup in Doug Legersky, who came in for the injured All-Pro in the AFC Championship game against the New York Jets, Pouncey is amongst the league’s best at his position and could really hurt the offense of the Steelers if he is a no go on Super Bowl Sunday.
Not only does Pouncey make the Steelers’ offensive line that much better in protecting two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, but when Doug Legersky did come in against the Jets it resulted in a fumbled snap in the endzone that gave the Jets a safety and basically got Rex Ryan’s squad back in the game. Make sure to get your NFL football betting in early here as this is going to be the biggest one for a while.
There have been some conflicting reports on Pouncey’s health ever since the end of the AFC Championship game as at first it was diagnosed as a high ankle sprain, but some news reports have also said that his left ankle was broken.
Most of the time a sprain is worse than a break in the ankle. Even though a broken bone sounds much worse, the bruising and swelling of a sprained ankle can cause more pain and take longer to heal.
With that being said, the severity of Pouncey’s injury hasn’t really been disclosed, but Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin says he isn’t counting out his Pro Bowl center of Super Bowl XLV just yet.
As of right now, Pouncey is on crutches and is seemingly out for the big game this Sunday, but you never know.
