There is a lot of hype that surrounds the Super Bowl every single year and they’re always players they get singled out as the supposedly “x-factor” or difference between winning and losing. In Super Bowl XLV, the two players that might turn out to be the X. factor for the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers are arguably two of the best defensive players in the league in Clay Matthews and Troy Polamalu.
Ironically enough, both of these NFL superstars are former USC players under head coach Pete Carroll. It is uncertain whether or not Clay Matthews would be the kind of star he is today, but obviously at this point in time it seems to have a very bright future in the NFL.
Troy Polamalu on the other hand became an instant star in the Pittsburgh Steelers immediately out of USC and quickly turned into arguably the best defensive player in the league if not the best safety in the NFL.
As a result of Polamalu’s impressive play this season, the superstar safety won the Defensive Player of the Year award edging out Clay Matthews by just two votes. Super Bowl Sunday will be another playing field altogether for these two defensive giants will go head-to-head in what could be an epic showdown between two of the best defenses in the league.
The Green Bay Packers may be favored right now with a -2.5 point spread, but the Pittsburgh Steelers will be out in force in Arlington, Texas as they will have no intentions of losing this game.
As for which of these two great defensive will have the better game remains to be seen, but keep your eye on Matthews as the Steelers’ offensive line will be at a disadvantage and the young linebacker will look to take advantage.
