Gene Smith, the athletic director at Ohio State, is retiring.

Given that veteran Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith revealed on Wednesday morning that he is planned to retire from his position effective June 30, 2024, it appears like the athletic department for the Ohio State Buckeyes will undergo some significant changes in the upcoming season.

The Buckeyes football team, which has been a consistent challenger for the national championship under Gene Smith’s direction, is the centrepiece of one of the biggest and most successful sports programmes in the whole nation. Gene Smith has been the athletic director at Ohio State for 18 years.

According to ESPN, Smith stated at a press conference on Wednesday, “I have always felt that a leader strives to be the right person at the appropriate time in the life of the organisation. “I think July 2024 is the ideal time to welcome new leadership to build upon what we have accomplished and keep up Ohio State’s illustrious tradition of excellence in athletics and business advancement,” said the former president of Ohio State.

Ohio State will have a new athletic director and university president in the same year since the institution is also looking for a new university president. Thus, significant changes will soon be implemented at the university.
