Rayados Monterrey advanced to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 away victory thanks to Sergio’s important penalty in the 97th minute.
The goalie for Tigres, Nahuel Guzman, was known for his slick tricks and acting during penalty kicks, which made this game intriguing. In the quarterfinals, Argentina-born Fernando Ortiz will coach Monterrey, which will play Los Angeles FC. Los Angeles FC defeated Real Salt Lake with a convincing 4-0 victory.
There were few opportunities to score during the heated contest between two Mexican teams in Houston. In the end, though, when it appeared like the game may conclude in a draw, Javier Aquino was fouled in the penalty area, and Canales converted the resulting penalty kick to score the game-winning goal.
Both teams played fiercely close to the goal during the thrilling contest. Tigres relied on the French player Andre Pierre Gignac, although Monterrey had outstanding players like Canales and the Argentine Rogelio Funes Mori.
When it looked like the game would go to penalties in the second half because of the ball-fighting, Monterrey took chances in attack and left Tigres, whose bench includes the Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi, empty-handed thanks to the penalty kick taken by Canales.
Due to their characteristic navy blue striped clothing, Monterrey, popularly known as the Rayados, is a strong team with a successful past.
They have won three domestic championships, five CONCACAF Champions League crowns, and five league championships. They are well-positioned to extend their winning streak in the following seasons with Canales on their roster.
