Tottenham Win Over Fulham To Go Top With 2-0 Home Victory

With a 2-0 victory over Fulham at home on Monday, Tottenham Hotspur’s best start to a top-flight season in over 60 years continued to improve as they went two points clear at the Premier League summit.

A seventh victory in nine league games was achieved by James Maddison’s first home goal for the team and captain Son Heung-min’s seventh league goal of the year.

Son scored his 50th goal at Tottenham’s new stadium since it opened in 2019 with a curling right-footed effort into the top corner in the 36th minute. Early in the second half, he set up playmaker Maddison for a goal with a clever finish.

Spurs are unbeaten in the league under new manager Ange Postecoglou, with 23 points, two more than local rivals Arsenal and champion Manchester City. They have the opportunity to advance five places when they visit Crystal Palace on Friday.

Despite a few late chances as Tottenham eased off, Fulham was disappointing and now sits in 13th place with 11 points.

The sole setback to Postecoglou’s stellar start in north London came when the west London team defeated Tottenham on penalties in the League Cup, making the victory all the more sweet.

After being forced to resign from Celtic and take over as manager, Postecoglou has made the best start of any new manager in the Premier League.

But the Australian was not quite satisfied with his team’s effort, even though they had another victory.

He said to Sky Sports, “It was a good result because Fulham are a tough team to break down.” “We didn’t play to our potential in the second half and were wasteful. It wasn’t a spectacular second half.

“You have to respect the game, and it can weigh you down if you are not playing at your best. I was not pleased with the liberties we took. Our 45 minutes with the ball were at their worst.”

FRONT-FOOT STYLE:

Spurs’ forward play was evident early on as they created opportunities, with Son being turned away by Fulham’s former Arsenal custodian Bernd Leno.

Additionally, Richarlison side-footed wide following a sweeping play, and defender Micky van de Ven curled an opportunity over the crossbar.

Joao Palhinha had Fulham’s finest chance in the first half, but Guglielmo Vicario made a fantastic save with his header.

After a clumsy pass from Calvin Bassey out of defence left Spurs exposed, the visitors gave the team a helping hand to break the deadlock when Richarlison found Son, who slipped to his right before curling the ball past Leno.

As he has been all season since joining from Leicester City during the offseason, Maddison was once again at the centre of a lot of Tottenham’s best effort, and he was shortly rewarded.

Son slid the ball to England international Maddison, who extended his body and drove a beautiful low finish past Leno after Bassey made another careless mistake.

Maddison, Son, and Richarlison were all substituted during the second half, and Tottenham lost concentration and might have suffered the consequences because they had another game on Friday.

But Fulham wasted a number of late opportunities, one of which went to Harry Wilson because he took too long to take his shot.

Spurs have never defeated Fulham in the Premier League. “In the second half we ramped the pressure up a bit but in the end we come away with nothing,” Fulham manager Marco Silva remarked.

“Maybe unfortunate to not score one or two and then we are talking about a different result.”
