It appears that the Players Tournament this week will be one without golfer Anthony Kim.  He was required to withdraw from the tournament due to an injury to his left thumb.

For the last month or so, Kim has been trying his hardest to manage with this thumb injury and he told various reporters at Quail Hollow, where he finished sixth overall in the tournament, that he was looking for the proper time to undergo surgery to try to be able to participate in as many tournaments as possible.

This particular injury, which is specifically a ligament that has detached at the base of his thumb, has actually been bothering Kim for over a year now and trying to cope with the pain of his thumb was causing other minor issues with other body parts such as his shoulder, which he complained of soreness at the Quail Hollow Championship last month.

24-year-old Kim will have to miss anywhere from about ten to twelve weeks following the procedure.  Because of this long timeframe for recovery, Kim will fail to attend and participate in the U.S. Open being held at Pebble Beach this year in June from the 17-20.  In addition, he may also have to sit out the British Open being held at St. Andrews this year in July from the 15-18.

Kim is currently second in points in team standings right behind Phil Mickelson.  He won at the tournament in Houston just last month and in eight starts, half of them are top 10 finishes, which proudly includes a finish at the Masters in third place.

Prior to having the scheduled surgery this past Tuesday for his thumb injury, he was hoping to make the Ryder Cup U.S. team this year, which is set to take place in Wales October 1-3.  According to how he recovers, he may still be able to make it and be able to participate in the British Open.
