Known right now as the world’s number 3 ranked golfer, Lee Westwood  has withdrawn from the Bridgestone Invitational, which is being held in Akron, Ohio, and will not attend and play in the PGA Championship next week.  Westwood, from England, has suffered an injury to his right calf, which is affecting his ability to play in these two events.

During his playing time on Thursday, the England golfer was 1-over par and 6-over par on Friday.  Earlier this year, Westwood was a runner-up at both the Masters and the Open.  He first suffered an injury to his calf during the first week of July at the French Open.  Therefore, Westwood has been playing with discomfort in his right calf now for more than a month and a ruptured plantaris muscle.

What probably strikes Westwood the most is that if he had been able to participate in the Bridgestone Invitational and do well, he could have very well been the number 1 ranked golfer in the world.  He would have needed to finish in the top two in order to do so.  As for now, Tiger Woods still holds the world’s number 1 golfer spot.

The 37-year-old has been told that he needs to lay down and rest for several weeks to see if it gets better instead of just taping his ankle up and trying to fight through the pain and leg weakness, which he has suffered due to the injury keeping him from participating in gym exercises and activities, while at the same time, his ability to golf well is slowly diminishing.

Westwood is ready to take as much time as needed to fully recover from this injury; however, he hopes that he can fully recover in time to still participate in the Ryder Cup, which begins October 1.
